The first Oskar Blues Hops and Heifers Burger Night at Dutch’s (2/7; 6:00 PM)

This was just sent over to us from the good folks at Dutch’s  just sent this event over. If you need a little background, Oskar Blues entered the Ohio craft beer market within the last year, making a huge splash. OB is an institution  in Colorado, both in barrel capacity in involvement in their community. They actually own a sustainable farm where they grow hops and graze cattle. To come full circle, these burger nights at Dutch’s will definitely feature beef from that farm and more than likely hops, too.

On to the good stuff…

Oskar Blues Hops & Heifers Burger Night
Thursday, February 7th; 6:00 PM

This will be the first of a regular, weekly Thursday night burger night featuring burgers made with beef from Oskar Blues Hops & Heifers farm.

In addition to weekly burger nights, on the first Thursday of every month we will tap a special release beer from OB, and it doesn’t stop there…

As a symbol of our enthusiasm for, and to help promote this partnership, Dutch’s will be putting on its first, kinda-sorta-not-really permanent handle! Everyday at Dutch’s you will be able to enjoy a rotating selection of Oskar Blues beer on draft! Although we thrive on an ever-changing selection of craft beer on draft, we thought that this Oskar Blues handle will serve as a reminder of our partnership with them and our weekly burger night.

This month we will tap Oskar Blues / SKA Brewing oSKAr the G’Rauch, a collaborative smoked IPA.

Beer Review: 2 very different stouts

Brewery: Samuel Smith’s
Beer: Oatmeal Stout
Style: Oatmeal Stout
Alcohol by volume: 5%

Gave it a pour straight down the middle and was rewarded with a completely opaque fully black beer. Due to the more aggressive pour I got a LOT of head, had to wait for it to settle before I could pour the whole bottle.

Very sweet chocolaty malty aroma with no hop presence at all. I also pick up some oatmeal aroma, or at least an aroma that reminds me of breakfast.

Super chocolate flavor with some grainy oat action as well. Slight bitterness from the hops but this is an extremely malty beer. Good flavor but not amazing.

The body and mouth feel is where this beer shines the brightest. Soooooo smooth and creamy it reminds me of drinking chocolate milk.

Overall I’m not impressed and this doesn’t live up to the hype I’ve heard about it, like the 99 rating on ratebeer.com. I got this at the Village Wine Cellar over in  Lebanon but you should be able to come across this beer just about anywhere better beer is sold.

Brewery: Oskar Blues
Beer: TenFidy
Style: Imperial Stout
Alcohol by volume: 10.5%

Very different pour from before. The color is blacker than I could’ve imagined and there was only the faintest layer of dark tan head before fading away.

Strong aroma of malt and grain with plenty of alcohol standing out.

Taste is similar to the smell, lots of alcohol though. That combines with malt bitterness to dominate the flavor.

My taste buds may have been skewed slightly by the Oatmeal Stout but I’m not super impressed by this beer either. Sure it’s a great beer and I digg how strong it is but I don’t feel like there is too much more there than that and malts. Sticking with G’Knight as my favorite Oskar Blues brew.

Beer Review: Oskar Blues Dale’s Pale Ale

This is the last of the beers that Oskar Blues provided for us to review but keep looking forward to the Ten FIDY review in the next few weeks. So far I’ve really enjoyed everything they’ve made. I had G’Knight (imperial red) a few months back and it’s still my favorite, then Deviant Dale’s India Pale Ale is next up, followed by Mama’s Little Yella Pils,  and lastly Oskar Blues’ scotch ale Old Chub. I’m happy to be drinking this red, white, and blue can of Dale’s Pale Ale after having done my civic duty and voted. As always, on to the beer!

Beer Review: Oskar Blues Old Chub

Continuing the hookup from Oskar Blues I’m trying their Scotch ale, Old Chub, tonight and tomorrow night will bring my review of Dale’s Pale Ale. This is a strong scotch ale, aka a wee heavy, and like all scotch ales feature lots of malt and almost no hops. This is historically due to the fact that hops don’t grow in Scotland and were expensive to import. Enough of that, onto the beer.

Beer Review: Oskar Blues Mamas Little Yella Pils

Here comes the second of the four beers that OB hooked us up with. This is a pilsner, something I don’t think has every been reviewed on this blog before. They’ve gotten a bad rap in the past 15 or so years by us craft beer geeks. Some big brewers decided to brew the living crap out of this beer and to do so in the most cost effective way possible. That has turned out great for their bottom line, but less great for our taste buds. But that’s their fault (and our fault for buying it) it’s not the fault of the style of beer. This is a great, complex, and classic style of beer. One that I’m happy to give some more attention to here.

Beer Review: Oskar Blues Deviant Dale’s India Pale Ale

Oskar Blues knows how to make an entrance! 50+ events over 2 weeks plus hooking us up with some samples! Oskar Blues was kind enough to hook Josh up and he was kind enough to share, so look forward to reviews of Dales Pale Ale, Mama’s Little Yellow Pils, and Old Chub Scotch Ale. I also previously reviewed G’Knight Imperial Red, which I scored last time I was in Nashville, and I loved it! As far as I know all Oskar Blues beer are available in Cinci now except for Ten FIDY, their stout, which should be here in one or two weeks. Tonight I’m checking out Deviant Dale’s India Pale Ale, which I had a few months ago but decided not to give it a full review because it wasn’t available around here. Now that that’s changed let’s get drinking!

Beer Review: Oskar Blues G’Knight

OK, so I feel bad. I keep reviewing beers that you can’t get around here. But hey, if you travel through somewhere and see this then you’ll know to grab it and bring it home to share! This is also an awesome beer with a great story.
