Beer Review: MadTree PsycHOPathy

MadTree Brewing has been around town for a few months now but only this week did they start canning their beer. As of the time this post is going up they only have PsycHOPathy canned but Gnarly Brown and Happy Amber will be filling the aluminium sometime in the next week or two. Shortly after that, around mid April, you’ll start seeing the cans pop-up around town! If you’re like me and impatient though then head on down to the brewery for a pint on draft and a 6-pack ($10) to take home!

If you follow other Cinci beer blogs you’ve no doubt already heard lots this week about MadTree. They’ve been on a bit of a beer blog spree which is great news for them and for our fellow beer bloggers! That said I’m not gonna focus too much on the brewery, if you want that info please check out our friend Brew Prof’s post MadTree cans roll off the line and make history. He did a fantastic job on that and there is only 1 thing he’s missing, a beer review!

Beer Review: Blank Slate/Triple Digit Determination

When I first heard about this beer I was very excited to try it. Long time readers know I love any Belgian or Belgian-style. Second to that is high gravity double/imperials. I’m not as huge a fan of IPAs as the average beer drinker these days appears to be, but I still enjoy the style. So a 9% Double Belgian IPA (not a Belgian Double IPA, see videos below) is right up my alley. Sadly life has gotten in the way and it’s taken me longer than I would’ve liked to acquire a bottle and review it for you all. this was released in September after all. The background on this is that Blank Slate Brewing Company (more info on BSBC from my interview with Scott LaFollette, the head brewer, here) teamed up with Triple Digit Brewing to create a new local collaboration brew.

[UPDATED] New local beer alert: Blank Slate Fume Cherrywood Smoked Porter

This is very, very preliminary. I saw late last week that the label was approved and contacted Scott with Blank Slate, but haven’t heard back yet. When I hear more, I’ll update this post. As of now, all I know is what’s in the name. I may hazard a guess that this is the special thing Blank Slate will be featuring at Hopnosis (The Comet, December 7 & 8), but that is entirely a guess.

UPDATE

Scott got back to me this morning with some details on the beer:

“It is a Brown Porter that uses Cherrywood Smoked Malt.  The beer comes in at about 5.5% ABV and should start rolling out around the end of the month.  It’s not meant to be a smoke “bomb” like a Rauchbier and the Cherrywood malt gives it a distinctly different character that is not as “ashy” or “bacony” as the standard beechwood smoked malt.  There will be a special version of it released at Hopnosis that will be a one keg only release.  It will be called “Fumar Chile” so I’ll let your imagination figure out what that means!”

Beer Review : Rivertown Winter Ale

Last night Rivertown Brewing tapped this year’s first keg of their much loved Winter Ale. Today I headed down to the, crazily packed, tap room for a pint of this. I also scored a growler of Roebling and 2 bottles of Ville De Rivere Geuze so look forward to those reviews as well.

Beer Review: Oskar Blues Deviant Dale’s India Pale Ale

Oskar Blues knows how to make an entrance! 50+ events over 2 weeks plus hooking us up with some samples! Oskar Blues was kind enough to hook Josh up and he was kind enough to share, so look forward to reviews of Dales Pale Ale, Mama’s Little Yellow Pils, and Old Chub Scotch Ale. I also previously reviewed G’Knight Imperial Red, which I scored last time I was in Nashville, and I loved it! As far as I know all Oskar Blues beer are available in Cinci now except for Ten FIDY, their stout, which should be here in one or two weeks. Tonight I’m checking out Deviant Dale’s India Pale Ale, which I had a few months ago but decided not to give it a full review because it wasn’t available around here. Now that that’s changed let’s get drinking!

Beer Review: Stone Enjoy By 11.09.12

This beer (the second of 2 in the series so far) is a very cool idea that hasn’t gotten much attention lately. Most people drink beer whenever they feel like it, some people keep beer for years letting it age, very few people strive to drink beer as fast as possible to experience an ultra fresh brew. That is Stone’s aim with this beer, and it’s predecessor the Enjoy By 9.21.12. They bottled and shipped this beer as fast as they could and once November 9th has come and gone they are taking back all the bottles and tossing them. This ensures that if this beer is consumed, it’s consumed fresh. The concept doesn’t matter much for many kinds of beers, especially my favorite Belgian ales, but when it comes to IPAs and super hoppy double IPAs the fresher the better. Hops lose their aroma and flavor with every day that goes by so Stone aims to make sure you get all the flavor. Now, don’t worry and think that the next IPA you buy is crap because it’s a few weeks old. A strawberry you buy at Kroger is still tasty, just not as rockin’ as one plucked off the vine.

New Local Beer Alert: Triple Digit Aftermath Fermented in Rum Barrels

Here’s one from the folks at Triple Digit Brewing Co. to keep an eye out for. You can see my review for the original Aftermath here. You don’t see aging in rum barrels as much as bourbon/whiskey (or even brandy), so this is quite intriguing. You can bet your bottom dollar you’ll be seeing a review from yours truly when this is released. As for details, this has been in rum barrels since July and it is on the time frame most barrel-aged beers are on: it will be ready when it’s ready. Regardless, I’ll get you more updates when there are some to report!

(Updated) Rivertown Old Sour Cherry Porter to be released this Thursday (6/14)

Update (per Rivertown’s Facebook page):

“Hey Guys they do but its special request only!! You need to ask for Danny gold or visit the kiosk. It will be available online by next week.”

Per a recent Facebook post on Rivertown’s page, the previously mentioned Old Sour Cherry Porter will be available this Thursday at The Party Source. I’m not aware of where else, if anywhere, it will be sold, but you’ll be able to purchase it in person or online. Some additional info from the Facebook post:

“Old sour.cherry porter! imperial porter aged in buffalo trace bourbon barrel, aged on dark michigan cherries and wild yeast (lactobocilus delbruki). Amazing!! available at party source in bellevue ky this thursday. U can also order online atwww.thepartysource.com

“Sold in 22oz bottles only, it was aged for almost 7 months!”

“this beer was fermented with wild yeast strains, and the ”bacteria culture”, (which.should.have.been mentioned sorry) lactobacillus delbrueckii”

I’ll be picking up a couple bottles of this, price permitting. If you decide to swing by The Party Source, make sure to pick up a bottle or two of Rivertown’s newest release of their delicious Lambic as well. I’m sitting on a bottle and am just waiting for the perfect time to open it. Last year’s release was very, very good, though.
