Beer Review: Oskar Blues Old Chub

Continuing the hookup from Oskar Blues I’m trying their Scotch ale, Old Chub, tonight and tomorrow night will bring my review of Dale’s Pale Ale. This is a strong scotch ale, aka a wee heavy, and like all scotch ales feature lots of malt and almost no hops. This is historically due to the fact that hops don’t grow in Scotland and were expensive to import. Enough of that, onto the beer.

Brewery: Oskar Blues
Beer: Old Chub
Style: Strong Scotch Ale
Alcohol by volume: 8%

Fills the glass with a very dark brown that reminds me of coke or Pepsi, except for the topping of thick tan head that shows no signs of going anywhere.

Wow, this is so full of awesome malt aromas. Lots of chocolate and caramel malts dominate the aroma. No hop presence to speak of though there is an enticing amount of alcohol.

The taste is packed with more of that chocolate caramel aroma, kinda reminds me of a Twix bar.

I’m not sure why they call it a Wee Heavy, but if it’s related to the mouth feel then it’s a spot on name. Ultra smooth and creamy with a wee heavy body. The alcohol aroma I mentioned earlier picks up a bit here. You can definitely feel the nice warming action.

I’ve always preferred hoppier beers than this but it’s great for a change to have almost no hop presence and such mad awesome malt aroma and flavor. Not my favorite Oskar Blues so far, that still goes to G’Knight, but this is still an fantastic beer. I also digg the amount of alcohol in here, it’s a pleasant amount at 8% that makes it nice for a week night but a bit too strong to have more then a few in a night. Though… it will keep you warm in the cold night air

(yes, I have been saving both the line “it will keep you warm in the cold night air” as well as the video)

P.S. thanks to a bowl of Halloween candy I was able to directly compare this to a Twix and the analogy holds up pretty well. They also combine to make a delightful flavor in my mouth, even though I’m more of a Reese’s peanut butter cup guy.

FULL DISCLOSURE: This beer was sent to Josh for free by Oskar Blues, and Josh was kind enough to share. Thanks buddy! To our readers, and any breweries interested in sending me stuff, giving me free beer impacts the review in only 1 way. That way is that I WILL review the beer and I WILL write a blog post about it. Giving me free beer does not guarantee you a favorable review or that I will tell everyone to go buy it or anything like that.
